Egyptian composer, arranger and producer Hany Shenouda has died at the age of 83, leaving behind a musical legacy that helped shape modern Egyptian and Arabic music and influenced generations of artists.

The Musicians Syndicate announced his death on Monday, with Syndicate President Mostafa Kamel and board members mourning the loss of one of the country’s most influential musicians.

In a statement, the syndicate described Shenouda’s career as exceptional, praising his contributions to Egypt’s and the Arab world’s music scene through his compositions, and dedication to nurturing young talent.

It hailed Shenouda as one of the pioneers of modern Arabic music, saying his work left a lasting imprint on the region’s cultural landscape. The syndicate also described him as “a symbol of generosity and creativity” and extended its condolences to his family, fellow musicians and admirers across the Arab world.

Born in Tanta in 1943, Shenouda graduated from the Faculty of Music Education in 1966 before continuing his studies at the Higher Institute for Music (Conservatoire).

In 1977, he founded El-Masryeen, one of Egypt’s first modern pop bands. Featuring Mona Aziz, Tahseen Yalmaz, Eman Younis and Mamdouh Qasem, the group became one of the country’s most influential musical acts during the late 1970s and 1980s, producing enduring hits such as Mathsebosh Ya Banat (Don’t Think That, Girls) and Mashya El-Sanyora (The Princess Is Walking).

Beyond his work as a composer, Shenouda played a pivotal role in discovering and mentoring new talent, helping launch the careers of some of Egypt’s biggest music stars.
