Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi approved the investment budgets of Alexandria Petroleum Company and Amreya Petroleum Refining Company (APRC) for the fiscal year 2026–2027, stressing the need of upgrading refineries to maximize output and improve product quality.

In a statement on Tuesday, the minister underlined the strategic role of petroleum refining companies in meeting domestic demand for petroleum products.

He stressed the need to continuously develop and upgrade refining units to maximize production capacity, enhance product quality, boost output, reduce import costs, and ease the financial burden on the state.

Badawi also called for strengthening product quality monitoring through accredited laboratories at all refineries, with companies preparing reports on laboratory test results for presentation to their general assemblies.

He urged companies to expedite the completion of ongoing projects and upgrade units with limited output, underlining projects that deliver quick returns, increase production, improve product quality, and enhance the economic value of assets.

Reham Allafa, Chairperson of Alexandria Petroleum Company, outlined the company’s investment plan, valued at approximately EGP 10 billion.

The plan includes several replacement and refurbishment projects, most notably the recommissioning of a boiler, which yielded savings of approximately EGP 1.7 billion compared to purchasing a new unit.

She also highlighted initiatives in occupational health, safety, environmental protection, and energy efficiency.

Chairman of Amreya Petroleum Refining Company Mohamed Sobhi said the company is implementing major replacement and renewal projects, including refurbishing petroleum product tanks, upgrading control systems, and digital transformation.

Sobhi highlighted the Naphtha Improvement and Aromatics Production Complex, which aims to increase benzol and gasoline output.

He also outlined several energy-saving projects, including improvements to furnace efficiency at the aromatics complex, expected to save 1,000 tons of fuel gas annually, the replacement of boilers, which will save 450 tons of natural gas per year; and the replacement of damaged steam traps, which will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 261 tons annually.
