The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) announced that Egypt maintained its position as Africa’s leader in fixed internet speed for the fifth consecutive year, and received Ookla’s Speedtest Award for the fastest fixed internet on the continent during the first half of 2026.
The award was announced at a ceremony held on the sidelines of Network X 2026 in Vienna, Austria, from October 13 to 15, 2026.
The recognition reflected the strong performance of Egypt’s fixed internet networks compared with those of other African countries.
Based on actual network performance measurements collected through Ookla’s Speedtest platform, the award used technical indicators that provided an objective assessment of speed, efficiency, and the real-world user experience.
Ookla was a global leader in measuring and analysing telecommunications and internet network performance.
This achievement reflected the Egyptian state’s sustained efforts to modernise digital infrastructure, improve telecommunications network efficiency, and expand fibre-optic coverage nationwide.
These initiatives enhanced service quality, increased network capacity to accommodate rising demand for connectivity and data services, and advanced Egypt’s digital transformation objectives.
The award also recognised the regulatory and technical efforts led by the NTRA, in collaboration with telecommunications operators and service providers, to monitor network performance, encourage infrastructure investment, and improve service delivery.
These measures helped sustain Egypt’s continental leadership and strengthen the competitiveness of its telecommunications sector.
Commenting on the achievement, NTRA Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Shamroukh said the award demonstrated tangible progress in developing fixed internet networks, strengthening digital infrastructure, and improving telecommunications services.
He stressed that the recognition supported continued network development, encouraged further investment by service providers, and promoted high-quality services in line with rapid technological advances.
Shamroukh commended Ookla’s role in applying global performance standards and providing objective benchmarks that encouraged network improvements and enhanced user experience.
