An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.6 struck about 29 kilometres from Suez at around 3 a.m., according to preliminary reports.
Tremors were reportedly felt in Egypt, Palestine, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Authorities were expected to assess the situation and issue further updates.
