Minister of Transport Kamel el-Wazir Friday met with Chairman of the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI) Abdel Monem el-Terras to discuss projects jointly implemented by their respective agencies, as well as the joint manufacture of transport vehicles.
The meeting came within the framework of directives by President Abdel Fattah el Sisi for state agencies to expand local manufacture of means of transport.
The two officials also discussed the current upgrade of 200 railway coaches, commissioned by the transport ministry.
The AOI has already completed improvements to 109 of the 200 coaches, el-Terras said.
For his part, el-Wazir said his ministry is working on the refurbishment of all passenger railway rolling stock on lines operated by the National Railways Authority.
He said a major portion of the coaches had already been renovated according to directives from the political leadership.
Talks also focused on the manufacture by the AOI of 1,000 freight cars.
El-Wazir cited instructions from President Sisi to upgrade freight cars and the national freight transport system in order to reduce pressure on the nation’s roads, bring down the number of road accidents, and increasing revenues to the National Railways Authority.
