Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker Tuesday called for more efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

These measures should include reducing the cost of energy generated from renewable sources, Shaker said.

The first dialogue of the Energy Transition Council, a mechanism created by the United Kingdom to bring together leaders of the global power sector to accelerate the transition from coal to clean power, referred to an urgent need for upgrading electrical energy storage technologies.

“We also need to increase dependence on electric cars and smart networks,” the minister said.

Shaker also underscored the importance of regional and international electrical interconnection, which would help countries tap into the different types of renewable and clean energy.

Shaker outlined measures taken by the Egyptian government in the past to ease the transition of energy.

The local electricity sector adopts different techniques that help advance this transition, including increasing dependence on hydrogen as a renewable energy source, Shaker said. Other measures include encouraging the private sector to invest in renewable energies.

The United Kingdom is preparing to host the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26.

Egypt is also ready to participate with the UK in this effort, he said.

“Egypt realises the importance of the conference which comes as the world faces unprecedented challenges, all related to climate change,” Shaker said, adding that the Covid-19 pandemic has shown that developing countries, especially in Africa, are most affected by climate change.

The minister said he was confident that such meetings would open the door to greater international cooperation, highlighting the challenges and the potentials for energy.
