Lebanon’s first lady, Neemat Aoun, praised Egypt’s efforts to empower women under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, saying the country had made progress in expanding women’s participation in different fields, Egypt’s National Council for Women said on Friday.
Aoun, who heads Lebanon’s National Commission for Lebanese Women, made the remarks during a meeting in Beirut with Amal Ammar, head of Egypt’s National Council for Women and the executive council of the Arab Women Organisation.
The two discussed ways to deepen Egyptian-Lebanese co-operation on women and family issues and to exchange national experiences, according to the statement.
Aoun stressed the value of sharing expertise and learning from Arab countries’ experiences in developing policies and programmes supporting women and families, it said.
Ammar outlined Egypt’s National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030, launched in 2017. It focuses on political, economic and social empowerment, as well as protection, with legislation and culture as supporting pillars, the statement said.
She also called for greater coordination among Arab institutions working on women’s issues, saying cooperation could help address challenges arising from rapid global changes while taking account of Arab societies’ priorities.
The meeting took place during Ammar’s visit to Beirut for the opening of a regional workshop on women’s issues amid major global changes. The event was organised by the Arab Women Organisation with Lebanese and international partners.
