CAIRO – Egyptian Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Ati asserted his ministry’s keenness on following up the construction safety of all water installations nationwide, topped by the High Dam and Aswan Reservoir, which are currently being rehabilitated, in addition to the change of the control system of their gates from manual to electronic.

This came at a meeting with head of General Authority of the High Dam and Aswan Reservoir Ashraf el Mohammadi, Director General of the Nile Museum in Aswan Irene Fayez, and Deputy Minister for Nile Water Affairs Abdel Rahim Yehia, according to a statement by the Irrigation Ministry.

During the meeting, the minister reviewed the rehabilitation works of the old Aswan Reservoir, as well as development works of the African Cultural Centre in Aswan and the Soviet-Egyptian Friendship Monument, which is located not far from the Aswan Dam. The 72-meter-high monument was built to mark the completion of the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s.

The Irrigation Ministry established the Cultural Center, to become a prominent tourist destination in the city of Aswan.

It was previously known as the Nile Museum. It was developed and became a cultural center. The center includes many collectibles from the civilisation and culture of African countries, as well as the customs and traditions of their peoples.

The centre was built on 146,000 square metres of land. Sections are allocated within the centre for the 11 Nile Basin countries to exhibit their historical, Nile-related items. It also includes a conference hall and a library.

It is a good place to explore how the African continent’s lifeline and its vast basin nourish with the irrigation of the mother river – the Nile River.
