Egypt’s Ambassador to Italy Bassam Radi said that the international community appreciates the humanitarian role played by Egypt under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, to make sure that the Gaza Strip is supplied with humanitarian aid coming from Egypt and abroad whether by air or sea.
Egypt was unanimously elected to become a member of the World Food Programme’s (WFP) executive council, an affiliated of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The selection of Egypt for this position is appreciation of the international organisations in Rome for its humanitarian role in regional conflicts, especially the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, which is under Israeli bombardment for almost two months.
Radi said that Egypt’s election to join the WFP’s high-level Executive Council comes in the wake of the visit by WFP’s Executive Director Ms. Cindy McCain to Cairo and her meeting with President Sisi.
McCain hailed on several occasions the pivotal role played by Egypt towards the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The WFP Executive Council is the highest body in charge of making decisions and approving the projects that the World Food Programme is implementing.
The WFP Executive Council had previously approved last June the $431-million programme’s country strategic plan in Egypt for a period of five years.
