German Ambassador to Egypt Frank Hartmann handed over 7 million face masks to World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Egypt Naeema al Gasseer during a ceremony at the German embassy in Cairo.
The masks will be distributed to the health utilities in Egypt to help protect healthcare workers.
Germany, as the second largest donor to the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT)-Accelerator, is committed to ensuring fair, transparent and affordable access to COVID 19 vaccines, medicines and diagnostics around the globe, said the German embassy in Cairo in a statement on Tuesday.
Egypt has received over 4 million doses of vaccines via COVAX and there will be more doses in the future, the statement added.
For her part, Gasseer expressed the WHO’s appreciation of this generous contribution by the German government, which is a sign of Germany’s solidarity with Egypt in its fight against once-in-a-lifetime pandemic.
She also stressed the importance of using face masks as part of the WHO’s comprehensive package of prevention and control measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
