In this opening chapter, the newspaper remembers the serendipitous evening when a bold remark over dinner kindled the ambition to create a beacon of Egypt’s timeless heritage.
Imagine standing at the meeting point of history and progress, where Egypt’s ancient heart beats anew beneath luminous stone, destined to inspire generations yet to come.
The GEM is not merely the world’s largest archaeological museum; it is a profound symbol of human ingenuity, unity, and cultural pride.
The origin of GEM is as surprising as it is inspiring. Acclaimed artist and then-Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosny, was dining at the Arab World Institute in Paris when an Italian architect and friend playfully asked, “What will you do with that storage in Tahrir?”
Spurred by both irritation and inspiration, Hosny replied, “We’ll build the world’s largest museum near the Pyramids.” That spontaneous declaration set in motion one of the most ambitious cultural initiatives of the 21st century.
Moved by Hosny’s conviction, his architect friend offered to undertake the feasibility studies entirely free of charge. What began as an impromptu retort soon grew into a shared mission. “I had no particular site in mind,” Hosny recalls, “but I believed passionately in the idea.”
Their vision came into focus during a visit to the Giza Plateau, in the imposing shadow of the Pyramids, where dreams of housing Egypt’s treasures truly took root.
Hosny presented his vision to then-president Hosni Mubarak, who embraced it wholeheartedly. Together, they surveyed a stretch of desert that would soon become the museum’s iconic home, a choice that would shape Egypt’s cultural landscape for generations.
But this journey was anything but swift. From its inception in 1992, preliminary studies stretched over eight years, followed by another four and a half years of comprehensive feasibility work, compiled across six substantial volumes.
Further groundwork, drafting terms of reference and selecting a project executor, consumed yet another two and a half years. The vision inspired a record 1,557 consultancy firms from around the world, underscoring the project’s extraordinary allure.
To realise a design worthy of Egypt’s eternal legacy, the Ministry of Culture launched an international architectural competition on January 7, 2002. Through every medium, including a dedicated website, the call went out to architects worldwide: create a museum that would not simply house artifacts, but embody the grandeur and reverence due to Egypt’s ancient heritage.
The competition unfolded in two phases. First, from May to August 2002, more than 2,200 firms representing 103 countries submitted 1,557 design concepts. Following a rigorous review, an international jury shortlisted 20 finalists, who then refined their vision into detailed, executable plans. The winning proposal – from Heneghan Peng Architects, Ove Arup, and Buro Happold, was chosen for its vision and brilliance.
Construction proceeded in three monumental stages: clearing and levelling the land to create a solid foundation; erecting essential infrastructure, including world-class artifact restoration centres, secure underground storage, a robust power station, and a vigilant fire station; and, finally, constructing the museum itself, a sanctuary for Egypt’s ancient wonders and an open invitation to the world.
The museum’s story stands as a testament to visionary leadership, international collaboration, and a profound respect for the heritage that unites us all.
