Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, said on Sunday that the data center industry is a major component of the digital society the Egyptian government wants to create in this country.
He said his ministry is keen on providing an added value and creating an attractive environment for investments in the data center industry.
“This is especially clear in the light of the advantages Egypt enjoys in this regard, including its distinguished geographical location,” the minister said.
He added in the opening session of the 4th Future of Data Centers Summit in Cairo that his ministry makes efforts to strengthen the information infrastructure, both locally and internationally.
The minister revealed that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had invested $2 billion in the past period to raise internet efficiency in Egypt.
These investments, he said, aimed to make Egypt the country with the highest internet speed in the African continent.
He pointed out that the third phase of the implementation of the fixed internet development project aims to increase internet speed, expand the network and increase the number of beneficiaries in the cities and the countryside.
A large number of data specialists from around the world attended the opening of the summit yesterday, along with a host of foreign diplomats and experts.
Minister Talaat said that a frequency spectrum had been offered to mobile phone companies.
Work is currently underway, he said, to increase the number of mobile towers at the level of the republic.
Around 18,000 government buildings have been connected to the fiber-optic network, out of a total of 33,000 government buildings in Egypt within the framework of the Digital Egypt Network project, the minister said.
Connecting these buildings to the fiber-optic network, he said, aims to help these government institutions provide citizens with digital services.
He added that a project is being implemented to extend the fiber-optic network to villages included in the Decent Life initiative for the development of the Egyptian countryside.
“The extension of the network to these villages would provide over 3.5 million homes in 4,500 villages with internet with high speed,” the minister said.
