Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co‑operation, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty met on Tuesday UN Special Envoy for Water Retno Marsudi on the sidelines of the ninth Cairo Water Week to discuss ways to strengthen co‑operation on water and sustainable development issues.
According to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nader Zaki, Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s aspiration to continue close co‑operation with the United Nations to ensure the success of the 2026 UN Water Conference and achieve practical outcomes that advance the international water agenda through 2030 and beyond.
The minister outlined the challenges posed by water scarcity in Egypt and reviewed national efforts to address them through the country’s water resources management strategy, including water conservation measures, expanded water treatment and reuse projects, and the modernisation of irrigation systems. He also stressed the importance of strengthening international co‑operation, technology transfer and capacity building to tackle global water challenges.
Abdelatty further underscored the importance of enhancing co‑operation and integration among riparian states sharing transboundary rivers, particularly the Nile, in a manner that serves mutual interests and benefits.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of unilateral measures that affect the rights and interests of downstream countries and stressed the need to adhere to international law, particularly the principles of prior notification and no significant harm, to safeguard water security and support stability and sustainable development.
