Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdel Atty asserted on Saturday the importance of acting to immediately and sustainably stop military operations in Sudan.
The foreign minister underscored the necessity of reaching a full political solution to respond to and meet hopes and aspirations of the Sudanese people.
Abdel Atty was addressing the opening session of a conference for Sudanese political and civil powers, which is held in the New Administrative Capital (NAC) in Cairo and attended by representatives of Sudanese factions, the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, the European Union, and a number of active countries concerned with the Sudan file.
The minister thanked all attendees for accepting the invitation by Egypt to participate in this important conference.
Egypt is interested in playing host to the conference to discuss the current catastrophic conditions in Sudan, according to him.
He said the conference is held at a critical juncture for Sudan which is facing a deep crisis that is taking its toll on the security and stability on the African continent, the whole world in general and Sudan’s neighboring states in particular.
All are well aware of threats of the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis facing Sudan and consequences of the current fighting in the country, according to him.
Abdel Atty said the immediate and sustainable cessation of military operations in Sudan will allow for a serious, coordinated and rapid humanitarian response by the international community.
Abdel Atty commended tireless and painstaking efforts exerted by Sudan’s neighboring countries that received millions of Sudanese brothers and shared with them their limited resources despite very difficult global economic conditions.
The minister urged the international community to honor its pledges made in a conference to support Sudan, that was held in Geneva in June, 2023 and during an international conference to support Sudan and neighboring states, which was held in Paris in April this year to bridge an existing financial gap.
He confirmed Egypt is intensifying its contacts to activate its participation in the conferences for humanitarian response to support Sudan and work with all multilateral humanitarian organizations in Geneva or New York and donor countries to support the most affected neighboring states against the negative repercussions of the crisis.
Egypt took the initiative to receive hundreds of thousands of Sudanese brothers who have fled to it since the onset of the crisis in Sudan, he went on to say.
Nearly five million Sudanese people are living in Egypt and since the eruption of the crisis hundreds of thousands more have been added to them, he said, adding the Egyptian government offered urgent relief aid that included foodstuffs and medical supplies to the brothers in the war-torn Sudan.
Egypt is carrying out many development projects in Sudan to provide basic services for people there, he added.
Egypt will continue doing its utmost in cooperation with all parties to stop the bloodshed in Sudan and help the Sudanese people achieve their hopes and aspirations, expressed by millions during their glorious revolution to live in their homeland in security, freedom, peace and justice, according to him.
He stressed Egypt will act to facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance offered by donor states to Sudan via the Egyptian territory and in coordination with international agencies and organizations concerned.
