Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie announced on Sunday the resumption of transits through the waterway by Evergreen, as the giant container ship EVER EON made its maiden passage through the canal.
The vessel crossed the canal as part of the northbound convoy on its voyage from the Netherlands to Singapore.
Owned by the Evergreen shipping line, EVER EON is 369 metres long and 53.6 metres wide, with a gross tonnage of 185,000 and a capacity of up to 16,556 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
The vessel operates on the NEU 7 service, run by the Ocean Alliance, which directly connects major ports along the trade route between the Far East and north-western Europe.
In accordance with the SCA’s protocol for vessels making their maiden transit through the waterway, Rabie assigned senior pilots Mahmoud Abu Ageila and Yezid Yehia from the Port Said pilotage sector, and Elhamy El-Babli and Nader Nagi from Ismailia, to board the vessel, welcome its crew and present a commemorative gift to its captain.
Rabie described Evergreen’s return to the canal as a positive indication that global trade between East and West was gradually returning to a sustainable course.
He added that the shipping line planned to resume further voyages through the canal in the coming period, following a suspension of nearly three years since the outbreak of the Red Sea crisis.
The SCA chairman said the Suez Canal had successfully regained several shipping services operated by major international lines serving the Europe-Asia trade route, including CMA CGM, Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, COSCO and Evergreen.
