Water is not merely a natural resource but the lifeblood of Egypt and a cornerstone of sustainable development, European Union (EU) Ambassador to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst has said.
Eichhorst made the remarks on Thursday at a ceremony honouring the winners of the first “Water and Nile Stories” training programme competition, held on the sidelines of the final day of the 9th Cairo Water Week (CWW 2026).
She highlighted the importance of the training programme, supported by the EU in co-operation with the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, noting that its title reflected the central role of water and the Nile in Egypt’s life and development.
The ambassador expressed pride in the EU’s co-operation with the Egyptian government in the water sector, stressing that discussions during CWW9 had underscored the vital role of water in achieving sustainable development in Egypt.
She also highlighted the importance of the press and media in raising awareness of water-related issues and providing coverage of the challenges facing the sector.
Eichhorst said the Egyptian government, in co-operation with the EU, was making significant efforts to advance sustainable development in the country.
The ninth Cairo Water Week featured extensive participation by international and regional organisations, which organised technical and scientific sessions and sponsored competitions. The event included a total of 137 sessions.
Participating organisations included the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the EU, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the International Water Management Institute, the Islamic Network for Development and Management of Water Resources, the German Agency for International Co-operation (GIZ) and the World Water Council, reflecting the growing scope of partnerships in the water sector.
