Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held a meeting on Wednesday with Deputy Director General of Rosatom Andrey Petrov and officials from the Russian state corporation’s infrastructure company to review the latest developments and implementation plans for an integrated seawater desalination project in the Dabaa region.

The meeting covered the project’s technical and implementation aspects, necessary steps for establishing the integrated desalination system, and the use of Rosatom’s latest technologies and specialised expertise.

During the meeting, Minister Esmat stressed that the project aims not only to provide water for the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, but also to serve the surrounding region with a sustainable source of desalinated water supporting development plans, urban expansion and economic and industrial activities.

The discussions addressed maximising the economic and environmental benefits of desalination by studying the extraction and utilisation of salts and minerals resulting from the process.

Such byproducts could support the establishment of related industries and projects based on specialised technical and economic studies.

The meeting also explored localising industries, components and equipment supplying desalination projects in Egypt, while increasing the participation of Egyptian companies in supply chains.

This would facilitate technology transfer, develop Egyptian industrial capabilities, gradually raise the local component and establish a specialised industrial base capable of meeting domestic desalination needs and eventually serving regional markets.

Petrov affirmed Rosatom’s commitment to continued co-operation with Egypt, providing the necessary expertise and technological solutions and supporting deeper industrial co-operation, technology transfer and local capability development.
