CAIRO – Egyptian Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker discussed with Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera and Director of IRENA’s Project Facilitation and Support division (PFS) Ahmed Badr ways to support Egypt in preparing for a UN climate conference, COP27, which will be held in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh in November.

In statements, Shaker hailed the fruitful and constructive cooperation between his ministry and IRENA, asserting the need of enhancing such cooperation in the various renewable energy spheres.

He said that Egypt intends to increase the supply of electricity generated from renewable sources to 42% by 2035.

For his part, La Camera lauded the distinguished relations binding Egypt and IRENA, affirming keenness on bolstering them in the various spheres.

He also expressed readiness for offering support to Egypt to prepare well for the COP27.

He further voiced his interest in cooperating with the Egyptian electricity ministry in the green hydrogen domain as it is a promising source of clean energy.

Shaker pointed out that Egypt cooperates with global companies to start talks and studies to implement experimental projects to produce green hydrogen. He further said that 15 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) have been signed in this respect.
