Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met on Sunday with heads of electricity distribution companies and their commercial sectors nationwide to review billing, verification and complaints-handling systems.
The step is in line with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives for close oversight of electricity billing and facilitating the settlement of outstanding balances, the ministry said in a statement.
It added that Minister Esmat reviewed billing and auditing mechanisms, faulty-meter reports and emergency meter availability, stressing accurate consumption readings and requiring photographs for readings used to calculate actual consumption.
He directed unified meter installation fees across all companies, replacement of faulty meters within 72 hours, and unified instalment plans for financial settlements according to citizens’ preferences, with billing based accurately on accounting months.
The minister also reviewed efforts to improve distribution companies’ performance, maintain supply nationwide, coordinate with the National Control Centre and the Ministry’s Crisis Centre, and manage emergencies, peak demand and heatwaves.
He stressed measures to reduce outages in frequency and duration and improve service-quality indicators.
Esmat ordered adherence to quality standards, weekly reports and stronger monitoring and inspection committees overseeing billing and accounting.
He also called for more technical support teams and continuous monitoring of complaints, direct communication with citizens, prompt review of grievances and periodic reports on responses.
He affirmed that all measures would be taken to facilitate services while safeguarding citizens’ right to reliable, high-quality electricity.
