President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received on Monday the CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, Alberto Calderon, on the sidelines of the opening of the Egypt Mining Forum 2026.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi.
AngloGold Ashanti was represented by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Stewart Bailey, and the President of the company’s Egypt operations, Hoda Ahmed El-Askalani.
Presidency spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said Sisi expressed his appreciation for the strategic partnership with AngloGold Ashanti, which operates the Sukari gold mine.
The president stressed Egypt’s interest in supporting the company’s investments and providing a suitable environment for business growth.
Sisi also expressed Egypt’s aspiration to expand co-operation with the company beyond operating Sukari into a broader strategic partnership in Egypt’s mining sector. This would include exploration, technology and expertise transfer, training and developing Egyptian talent, developing local supply chains and attracting further investment.
The meeting also reviewed the company’s operations and future expansion plans in Egypt, as well as ways to strengthen co-operation in mining.
Calderon expressed his appreciation for meeting Sisi and praised the Egyptian government’s continued support for the company.
He also commended efforts by the relevant authorities to address challenges facing its operations in Egypt.
He said Egypt is one of the company’s priority investment destinations. AngloGold Ashanti plans to increase investments at promising sites in Egypt’s mining sector, supporting the discovery and development of new projects similar to Sukari, Calderon added.
The meeting also discussed expanding the company’s exploration programmes, particularly in gold mining.
Sisi affirmed Egypt’s readiness to provide the necessary support to facilitate the company’s activities and expand the mining sector’s contribution to the national economy.
