Ambassador Mohamed el-Shenawy assumed his new role as Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency on Wednesday, succeeding Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy, who has been appointed Egypt’s Ambassador to Hungary after serving as the presidential spokesperson for nearly two years.

‏El-Shenawy, a graduate of Cairo University with a Bachelor of Law degree, also holds a Master’s degree in International Law from the University of London.

‏He began his career as Deputy Prosecutor General before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995, where he started his diplomatic career in the Department of International Legal Affairs and Treaties. He later served at the Egyptian Embassy in The Hague, and upon returning to Cairo, worked in the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

‏El-Shenawy has had an extensive career, including serving as a member of Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. He also rejoined the mission during Egypt’s tenure on the UN Security Council. His work in the UN General Assembly from 2007 to 2019 included representing Egypt in negotiations concerning the maritime border demarcation between Egypt and Greece. Furthermore, he played a key role in Egypt’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2016-2017 term.

‏In addition to his work at the UN, el-Shenawy was involved in overseeing Egypt’s presidency of the UNSC Counter-Terrorism Committee and served as Egypt’s expert representative in various key UN General Assembly committees focused on legal affairs, financial and administrative matters, peacekeeping, peace-building operations, and the reform and expansion of the UNSC.

‏Throughout his distinguished career, el-Shenawy has contributed to numerous international forums and served as a member of various national committees.
