Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Swailem congratulated Egypt’s farmers on Farmers’ Day, observed annually on September 9, honouring their vital role and recognising their continued efforts to support the Egyptian economy and strengthen food security.

Swailem said that all water-related projects currently being implemented by the ministry are primarily aimed at serving farmers and ensuring that the agricultural sector receives the water supplies it needs.

He noted that this year’s Farmers’ Day comes as Egypt nears the successful end of the peak water-demand season. The ministry’s agencies have made extensive efforts to ensure the season passes smoothly, without crises, while meeting the needs of all water users in the required quantities and at the appropriate times.

Swailem stressed that the success of the current summer season was also made possible by farmers’ active co-operation. This included adhering to irrigation rotations, clearing private irrigation channels, and protecting waterways from encroachments and waste dumping.

These efforts complemented the ministry’s work to develop and maintain the country’s water infrastructure, including canals, drains, pumping stations and water facilities.

He called on Egyptian farmers to continue working closely with the ministry to ensure the sound management of water resources. He also highlighted the vital role of water users’ associations across the country in supporting the ministry’s efforts to manage the water system and protect it from pollution and encroachments.

Swailem added that the ministry has worked over the past period to improve water distribution and modernise its management approach, helping the irrigation system meet irrigation and drinking-water needs during the current summer season.
