Egypt’s national electricity grid absorbed a record peak load of 40,000 megawatts on Tuesday, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy said.
The figure was 700 MW higher than Monday’s peak of 39,300 MW and exceeded last year’s record of 39,800 MW, which was recorded during a severe heatwave, according to reports from the National Energy Control Centre.
Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat attributed the grid’s ability to cope with unprecedented demand to adherence to quality standards, scheduled maintenance programmes and the adoption of new operating procedures.
“The commitment to quality standards and maintenance programmes, along with the implementation of new operating patterns, has increased the unified grid’s ability to absorb rising loads and unprecedented consumption rates,” Esmat said, according to the ministry statement.
The ministry said electricity demand had continued to rise in recent days, with daily increases expected to remain unusually high during the current summer.
It added that it had increased technical support, emergency response, maintenance and occupational safety teams to protect the grid and ensure uninterrupted power supplies.
