Egypt’s new defence co-operation, aerospace partnerships platform

As military delegations, aerospace companies and defence manufacturers gathered on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, the second El Alamein International Air-show and Space Exhibition (EIAS 2026) was never going to be just another display of aircraft.

The three-day event, which closed on 10 September, drew more than 250 exhibitors from 50 countries, over 50 aerial displays, nearly 12,000 visitors and more than 100 aircraft of different types.

The numbers alone gave it weight. But the real significance lay in who came and what they discussed.

Military leaders, defence ministries, civil aviation authorities, space agencies and major manufacturers met in El Alamein to compare capabilities, explore partnerships and consider the shifting nature of air power.

Launched in 2024, the show was designed to connect the aerospace, defence and space sectors across Africa and the Middle East.

Egypt’s Ministry of Defence, the Egyptian Air Force, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Egyptian Space Agency and EgyptAir all took part alongside international and local industry players.

Conversations ranged across combat aircraft, transport planes, helicopters, unmanned systems, radars, communications and electronic warfare.

These matters carry particular weight in a region investing heavily in air-power modernisation to protect airspace, critical infrastructure and strategic maritime routes.

Modern air power is no longer about individual platforms. A fighter jet’s value increasingly depends on how well it links with sensors, command networks, drones, satellites and electronic-warfare systems.

El Alamein offered a place where countries could examine those connections and discuss longer-term co-operation in training, maintenance, modernisation and technology transfer.

For global defence companies, Egypt is more than a single market. Its location opens doors to the wider Middle East and Africa, where demand for aerospace and defence equipment remains strong.

Crowded stage

The exhibitor list reflected that reach. Airbus, Boeing, CATIC, Dassault, Korea Aerospace Industries, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Raytheon, Rosoboronexport and Turkish Aerospace Industries all took part.

Egyptian participants included the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation, the Ministry of Military Production, Petroleum Air Services, Air Cairo, Nile Air and others.

The mix mirrored Egypt’s broadening defence relationships.

Earlier this year, the country held a joint air exercise with China and joined the multinational Anatolian Eagle exercise with Türkiye and Azerbaijan.

Russia maintained a strong presence through Rosoboronexport. Its director general, Alexander Mikheev, called Egypt Russia’s “most important strategic partner”, noting that military-technical co-operation between the two countries continues to evolve with global trends.

The UAE brought a national pavilion backed by its Ministry of Defence and the Tawazun Council.

India sent its Sarang helicopter display team flying the locally made Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv.

Saudi Arabia, Russia, Spain, Türkiye, India, the UAE and France all contributed to the opening displays.

The range of participants mattered. Countries with different political and defence relationships with Egypt found themselves in the same place, creating unusual opportunities for conversation between military institutions that do not always meet on equal ground.

Diplomacy in the hangars

One of the quieter but more lasting roles of the air-show is the space it creates for defence diplomacy.

When military officials, government representatives and industry executives share the same grounds, informal channels open that can later support co-operation in training, maintenance, technical support and research.

For Egypt and its Arab partners, the gathering offered a chance to deepen existing ties.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain were among those present. Their participation does not amount to a new alliance, but regular contact between air forces can improve interoperability and support co-operation against shared challenges, from drones to threats against critical infrastructure.

As more countries invest in local maintenance, joint manufacturing and specialised expertise, military relationships are beginning to move beyond simple buyer-seller arrangements towards longer-term industrial partnerships.

Balancing partners

El Alamein also reflected Egypt’s wider effort to diversify its international relationships.

Cairo continues longstanding defence ties with the US and European countries while expanding co-operation with China, Russia, India, Türkiye and others. The air-show made that policy visible in one place.

Recent engagement with China illustrated the approach. After Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Cairo, the two countries expanded military co-operation.

The US and Europe remain central. US aircraft and personnel took part alongside partners from more than 80 countries.

Charge d’Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Cairo Eric Gaudiosi said the American pavilion, featuring more than 25 companies, reflected “the depth of the US-Egypt partnership” across aviation, aerospace, defence and commercial sectors.

France, Italy, Greece and Spain also played significant roles, reflecting both their industrial strengths and their wider interests in the Mediterranean.

The presence of Greece and Cyprus carried added weight given growing trilateral co-operation with Egypt.

What remains?

The lasting value of El Alamein will not be measured by the number of aircraft on the ground or the spectacle of the flying displays. It will be measured by what follows.

If the meetings produce joint training programmes, industrial partnerships, maintenance arrangements, technology-transfer agreements or co-operation in unmanned systems, electronic warfare and space technology, the event’s significance will stretch well beyond its three days.

Egypt brings clear advantages: a location that links the Mediterranean with Africa and the Middle East, armed forces with extensive regional experience, and a stated ambition to expand its own industrial and technological base.

If those strengths can be built upon, El Alamein could gradually shift from an annual showcase into a more lasting regional platform for defence and aerospace co-operation, experts said.

The second edition of the air-show made one point clear. Air power today is no longer simply about acquiring aircraft. It is about technology, industrial capacity, training, logistics, intelligence, space capabilities and the partnerships that hold them together, they added.

That is why governments, militaries and companies are paying closer attention to El Alamein.

Egypt is offering more than a stage for aircraft. It is creating a place where competing interests can meet, partnerships can form, and opportunities in the Middle East and Africa can be explored in real time, they note.
