Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdel Aaty met on Thursday with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Berham Saleh to explore ways of strengthening cooperation and addressing key refugee issues. The meeting was attended by Ambassador Salah Abdel Sadeq, head of Egypt’s Permanent Committee on Refugee Affairs.
Minister Abdel Aaty praised UNHCR’s partnership with the Foreign Ministry in managing Egypt’s migration and refugee platform, which helps ensure access to health and education services. He described the recent promulgation of Egypt’s first national asylum law as a historic milestone, creating a comprehensive framework for refugee and asylum matters in line with Egypt’s international commitments.
The minister also highlighted the heavy burdens Egypt faces in hosting large numbers of refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants, who receive equal access to essential services under a non-discriminatory policy that avoids the establishment of camps. He stressed the importance of refugees regularising their status in accordance with national laws and regulations.
