Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has stressed the need to intensify efforts to fully implement US President Donald Trump’s comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, with all its commitments, in a manner that contributes to ending the war and consolidating the ceasefire.
Abdelatty made the remarks late on Monday as he hosted a meeting of the Arab-Islamic Group of Eight at the Egyptian mission in New York, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81), the Foreign Ministry in Cairo said in a statement on Tuesday.
The group comprises Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Türkiye, Pakistan and Indonesia.
The Egyptian top diplomat stressed the need to prevent any obstruction to the peace plan and lay the foundations for lasting peace and stability, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nader Zaki said.
Abdelatty also reviewed Egypt’s efforts, in co-operation with mediators, over the past period, stressing that all parties, including Israel, must assume their responsibilities and refrain from violations that could undermine the ceasefire.
He called for safe, full and unhindered humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip and stressed the importance of accelerating early-recovery efforts and allowing the necessary supplies into the territory to meet the urgent needs of the Palestinian people and improve humanitarian conditions.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land. He also condemned Israeli measures in the West Bank and attempts to alter the existing legal and historical status of Jerusalem and its holy sites.
The foreign minister warned that settlement expansion and measures aimed at creating new facts on the ground undermine prospects for establishing a Palestinian state, threaten the two-state solution and jeopardise efforts to achieve peace in the region.
The foreign ministers agreed to continue and intensify co-ordination and consultations over developments in the occupied Palestinian territories in the coming period, with a view to promoting security and stability in the region.
