The completion of Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere hydropower dam and power plant by an Egyptian consortium marks a major milestone in strategic co-operation between Egypt and African countries, CEO of Elsewedy Electric Ahmed Elsewedy said.

Elsewedy made the remarks on Friday while accompanying Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to Tanzania for the official inauguration of the project, which was built by a consortium comprising Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric.

He said the project reflected the Egyptian leadership’s directives and the government’s continued support for strengthening co-operation and integration with African nations.

The dam was a landmark achievement for Egyptian companies and engineers, demonstrating their ability to deliver major infrastructure and clean-energy projects in Africa in line with international standards, Elsewedy said.

The project is expected to significantly increase Tanzania’s electricity-generation capacity, help control flooding and provide clean energy to support industrialisation and economic growth, he added.

The chief executive of Elsewedy Electric subsidiary Elsewedy PSP, Hisham Hegazy, said the project demonstrated the advanced engineering and technological capabilities of Egyptian workers in carrying out major hydropower and complex electromechanical projects.

Engineering and technical teams overcame exceptional logistical, environmental and operational challenges to complete the project, he said, adding that the achievement strengthened the position of Egyptian companies as reliable partners in Africa’s transition to clean energy and sustainable development.
