Egypt’s Ambassador to Italy, Bassam Radi, honoured Egyptian citizen Osama Mohamed Abdullah Shalaby, 56, and his son, Mohamed Osama Shalaby, 20, after they helped stop the perpetrator of a deadly attack in the northern Italian city of Modena.

The ambassador invited the duo to the Egyptian embassy in recognition of what he described as their bravery and positive representation of Egyptians abroad.

The incident took place two days ago when an Italian man carried out a car-ramming and stabbing attack in Modena, injuring eight people, according to local media reports.

The attacker reportedly drove into pedestrians before continuing the assault with a knife, causing panic in the city streets.

According to the Egyptian embassy, the father and son pursued the suspect through several streets and alleyways before managing to overpower him and hold him until Italian police arrived at the scene.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also praised the Egyptian pair for their courage, saying they acted without hesitation despite the attacker being armed with a knife.

Italian media widely covered the incident, highlighting the background of the two Egyptians, who work in the construction sector in Italy. The family originates from Tala in Egypt’s Menoufia Governorate.

In comments carried by Italian media outlets, the father and son said: “We were not afraid. We are Egyptians and fear no one but God.”
