Egypt welcomed the United States’ announcement, designating the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) in Egypt as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” (SDGT) entity.

In a statement appeared on the Foreign Ministry Facebook Page, Egypt described this decision as an important and significant step that reflects the serious threat posed by the group’s extremist ideology and the dangers it presents to regional and international security and stability.

Egypt further praised the efforts of the US administration, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, in combatting international terrorism and confronting terrorist organisations.

“This designation is fully consistent with Egypt’s long-standing and firm position towards the Muslim Brotherhood, which the Egyptian state has classified as a terrorist organisation due to its employment of violence, extremism, and incitement. The group’s exploitation of religion to achieve political objectives has caused profound harm to Egypt and other countries in the region over many decades,” the statement read.

It added that “throughout this period, the organisation has been responsible for acts of violence and criminal activity targeting Egyptian citizens, including members of the Police, the Armed Forces, and civilians, as part of systematic efforts to undermine national security and stability”.

Egypt added that the US designation underscores the soundness and legitimacy of Egypt’s resolute stance against the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood, a stance adopted following the June 30, 2013 revolution in defense of the will of the Egyptian people and the protection of state institutions. This position was taken in response to attempts by the organisation to seize control of the state and impose its destructive agenda through violence and terrorism.

Egypt reiterates its commitment to intensifying international co-operation to combat terrorism in all its forms, to dry up its intellectual, financial, and logistical sources, and to confront all extremist organisations that threaten international peace and security, the statement concluded.
