The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Tuesday welcoming the United States’ decision to lift Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Cairo described the move as a step that supports stability in Syria, enhances prospects for economic recovery and reconstruction, and helps create conditions for Syria’s reintegration into its Arab and international environment.
Egypt reaffirmed its continued support for the Syrian people during this phase, stressing the importance of enabling Syria to restore its institutions, safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity, and meet the aspirations of its citizens for security, stability and development.
The statement underlined that respect for Syria’s sovereignty and unity is fundamental to achieving lasting stability in the country and the wider region. It also highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts in Syria to combat terrorism and extremism, alleviate humanitarian suffering, and advance a political solution to the crisis.
