Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, expanding co-operation across political, economic and developmental fields, and promoting an inclusive approach to water security within the Nile Basin.
The remarks came during a telephone conversation the minister had on Thursday with Congolese Foreign Minister Thérèse Wagner.
During the talks, the two ministers discussed ways to deepen bilateral co-operation and exchanged views on a range of issues of mutual interest, said the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Nader Zaki.
Abdelatty welcomed the positive momentum in Egyptian-Congolese relations, expressing Egypt’s interest in further expanding co-operation across various sectors, increasing bilateral trade and strengthening the participation of Egyptian companies in implementing development projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Addressing water security, the foreign minister stressed the importance of co-operation and integration among Nile Basin countries to achieve shared benefits and serve their common interests.
He emphasised the need to uphold the principles of consensus, solidarity and brotherhood to restore the inclusive nature of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), while rejecting unilateral measures.
Minister Abdelatty also welcomed positive developments in the consultations aimed at restoring the initiative’s inclusivity in accordance with international law, stressing the importance of reaching an approach that safeguards the interests of all Nile Basin countries and promotes mutual benefits through co-operation and dialogue.
