Egypt has welcomed the unanimous decision by the Arab League Council of Ministers, mandated by Arab leaders, to appoint Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the Arab League for a five-year term starting July 1, 2026. The decision was adopted during the Council’s resumed 165th session held Monday in Amman, Jordan.
The appointment reflects recognition of Egypt’s pivotal role under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in strengthening Arab unity and its distinguished ties with fellow Arab nations. It also acknowledges Fahmy’s extensive diplomatic experience and long career in advancing Arab cooperation regionally and internationally.
Egypt extended its best wishes to Fahmy for success in his new role, expressing confidence that his leadership will further enhance joint Arab action, improve coordination mechanisms, safeguard Arab national security, and meet the aspirations of Arab peoples for stability, development, and prosperity.
Egypt also expressed deep gratitude to outgoing Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit for his dedicated service and significant contributions during his tenure, particularly in defending Arab interests and strengthening the Arab League’s role amid the region’s fast-changing challenges.
