Egyptian Minister of Transport, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, held talks with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce Mark Mitchell on expanding co-operation in transport and logistics, on the sidelines of a Port Infrastructure and Maritime Innovation Forum organised by the US Embassy’s Commercial Service in Cairo.

The meeting highlighted the strategic nature of Egyptian-US relations and Egypt’s interest in attracting US investment amid its major infrastructure and transport development projects.

El-Wazir outlined opportunities for US companies to operate port terminals, attract American shipping lines and establish joint industrial and logistics zones behind terminals, with the aim of manufacturing products for export to the US and positioning Egypt as a hub for American industries in the Middle East.

Proposed projects include the operation and maintenance of a major container terminal at Alexandria’s El-Mex Port, a general cargo terminal at Damietta Port, the establishment of a commercial shipyard in Damietta and the development of an iron ore reception terminal at Adabiya Port.

El-Wazir also highlighted investment opportunities at Gargoub Port and potential co-operation in electric traction and international transport corridors, stressing their importance in supporting global trade and consolidating Egypt’s position as a regional transport, logistics and transit hub.

Mitchell praised Egypt’s progress in developing its transport infrastructure and expressed US interest in establishing partnerships in the sector. He said the next phase would involve co-ordinating with interested US companies to identify projects that could be implemented in line with the priorities of both sides.
