Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty met on Friday with Massad Boulos, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump on Arab and African affairs, to discuss bilateral ties and regional issues, Egypt’s foreign ministry said.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Alamein Africa Forum. Both sides praised the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States, the ministry said, adding that Abdelatty called for stronger political and economic co-operation and increased investment.
Boulos praised Egypt’s role in Africa and said hosting major African events in El Alamein could help boost regional co-operation, particularly in trade and investment, according to ministry spokesman Nader Zaki.
The two officials discussed Libya, with Abdelatty stressing the need to preserve the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to support its national institutions and political process.
They also discussed the Horn of Africa. Abdelatty called for de-escalation and political solutions, and said Israel’s recognition of what he called “Somaliland” violated international law and Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the ministry said.
On Sudan, Abdelatty stressed the need to safeguard the country’s unity and institutions and backed efforts to end the conflict through dialogue and negotiations.
The talks also covered Egypt’s water security, with Abdelatty calling for compliance with international law and rejecting unilateral measures on the Nile, the ministry said.
