Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilem, has affirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting development projects in Nile Basin countries.
Egypt has launched a financing mechanism worth $100 million to support studies and development programmes in these countries under the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the minister said on Monday.
According to a statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Sweilem reviewed a report on bilateral co-operation projects with southern Nile Basin countries presented by the Head of the Nile Water Affairs Sector, Aref Gharib.
The report highlighted Egypt’s efforts to strengthen co-operation with Nile Basin countries through development projects exceeding $115 million in total value.
In Uganda, Egypt is carrying on with the sixth phase of the Aquatic Weed Control Project, which began in 2023 and is progressing according to schedule agreed upon with the Ugandan side.
The report also reviewed the implementation of a memorandum of understanding on Integrated Water Resources Management signed during the Ugandan president’s visit to Egypt in August 2025.
The $6 million project includes building underground water reservoirs, drilling and developing groundwater wells, converting wells to solar power, and training staff at Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment.
In addition, the report reviewed proposed areas of co-operation between Egypt and Kenya through new water projects to support sustainable development and benefiting the Kenyan people within the framework of strong bilateral relations.
