Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom reaffirmed on Wednesday Egypt’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline and advancing structural economic reforms to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen development planning and accelerate implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
His remarks came during a high-level meeting with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2026) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, Minister Rostom noted the launch of Egypt’s Fourth Voluntary National Review (VNR), describing it as a reflection of the country’s institutional commitment to integrating the 2030 Agenda into national planning and policymaking.
He also outlined priorities for future co-operation with the United Nations, including the development of advanced economic modelling and population forecasting tools to support evidence-based planning and respond effectively to demographic changes.
The minister further reviewed the government’s economic transformation programme, stressing Egypt’s commitment to sustaining fiscal discipline alongside comprehensive structural reforms.
He also presented the Infrastructure Financing Guarantee Mechanism, developed in cooperation with the World Bank, describing it as an innovative tool to mobilise long-term financing for national infrastructure projects.
For her part, Mohammed praised the Infrastructure Financing Guarantee Mechanism, describing it as a promising model that could be replicated across Africa.
She also welcomed Egypt’s active contribution to shaping the emerging “Beyond GDP” agenda, recognising Cairo’s role in developing more comprehensive approaches to measuring sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation between the Egyptian government and the United Nations in developing policies, planning tools and innovative financing mechanisms that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and promote sustainable development for future generations.
The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development is being held under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and focuses this year on accelerating transformative action to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
