Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi and New Valley Governor Hanan Magdy attended the signing of a cooperation protocol to establish the “Egypt Phosphate International School of Applied Technology” in Kharga, the country’s first specialised applied technology school focusing on mining and phosphate ores.

The school will be established through cooperation between the Petroleum Ministry, Education Ministry, New Valley Governorate, Misr Phosphate Company and Galaxy Development, its academic partner.

It will combine classroom education with practical training and prepare students with the technical and technological skills required by the mining sector.

Badawi said the school would help meet the growing need for qualified technical workers as Egypt’s mining sector develops.

He stressed that investing in human capital is essential to the state’s efforts to develop the sector and maximise the added value of mineral resources.

The school is planned to graduate 100 skilled technicians annually through a three-year integrated technological and dual-education programme.

Graduates will receive an accredited applied technology secondary school diploma from the Education Ministry, along with an accredited work-experience certificate after completing practical training.

New Valley Governor Hanan Magdy said the school would strengthen technical education in the governorate and better link education with the needs of the labour market, particularly the mining sector.

The school is expected to begin operating in the 2026/2027 academic year. It is also planned to coordinate with the Abu Tartour phosphate acid production project, allowing students to gain practical experience in a real industrial environment.

The initiative aims to provide qualified workers for mining and related industries, improve workforce skills and expand employment opportunities for New Valley residents.
