CAIRO – Speaker of the House of Representatives Hanafi Gebali said Egypt took part in the145th meetings of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) and related meetings, recently held in the Rwandan capital Kigali.
The IPU agreed on Egypt’s hosting of a regional office for the Union in the Arab region, added Gebali during the parliament’s general session Monday.
The office, the first of its kind ever in the Middle East and Africa, is part of the Union’s action plan to establish different regional offices to promote quality of interaction with parliaments in the various regions, according to him.
Gebali led a high-level parliamentary delegation to the meetings in the Rwandan capital.
He addressed the meetings on gender equality and the establishment of gender-sensitive parliaments.
Gebali attended the IPU permanent committees’ meetings on climate change and human rights violations.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international organisation of national parliaments.
Its primary purpose is to promote democratic governance, accountability, and co-operation among its members; other initiatives include advancing gender parity among legislatures, empowering youth participation in politics, and sustainable development.
