Egypt’s Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem met on Wednesday members of the Presidential Advisory Council of Egyptian Scientists and Experts, along with executives from automotive manufacturers and component suppliers, to discuss measures to increase local content in vehicle production and manufacture car bodies entirely in Egypt.
The meeting reviewed a study prepared by the council that aims to double Egypt’s vehicle output over the next five years by expanding local production of automotive components, particularly metal parts and vehicle bodies.
Discussions also focused on building an integrated industrial ecosystem linking vehicle assembly plants with local supply chains capable of producing components that meet international standards.
Participants highlighted the importance of making greater use of Egyptian engineering expertise in vehicle design, tooling, and manufacturing processes and testing. They also explored opportunities to export locally made components, develop lighter materials to improve fuel efficiency and prepare for electric vehicle production.
Hashem said the ministry aims to move beyond vehicle assembly toward establishing a fully integrated automotive industry based on local manufacturing, technology transfer and deeper industrial localization.
He added that the Industry and Finance Ministries are coordinating on a programme to replace old vehicles with newer, more efficient models through incentives for consumers.
The initiative is expected to boost demand for locally manufactured vehicles while increasing the supply of scrap metal for domestic steel production, supporting the national Automotive Industry Development Programme (AIDP).
