Means of boosting bilateral ties were at the core of talks which Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation, and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, held with Tanzania’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81), in New York.
The two ministers also discussed on Saturday evening, co-ordinating positions on issues of mutual interest, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
Abdelatty and Kombo commended the growing momentum in relations between the two countries, highlighted by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s visit to Tanzania in July and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s participation in the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower project, which was carried out by Egyptian companies, Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Nader Zaki said.
The project offers a successful model of strategic partnership between Egypt and Tanzania, he added.
The Egyptian chief diplomat invited Tanzania to take part in the Alamein Africa Forum, slated for October 2-4 in New Alamein, on the sidelines of the 8th mid-year co-ordination meeting of the African Union.
On water security, Abdelatty stressed the importance of co-operation and integration among Nile Basin countries to achieve common benefits and mutual interests.
He also underscored the necessity of upholding a spirit of consensus and brotherhood to restore inclusiveness to the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), while rejecting unilateral measures.
The minister welcomed positive developments in the NBI’s consultative process aimed at restoring inclusiveness in accordance with international law and achieving mutual benefits for all Nile Basin countries.
