During his visit to the US, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met on Tuesday Syria’s Minister of Energy Mohammad Al-Bashir to strengthen cooperation in the oil and gas sectors.

The two ministers reviewed progress in implementing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Egypt and Syria in the field of natural gas, including procedures related to a gas supply agreement through the Arab Gas Pipeline.

They also explored opportunities to cooperate in the rehabilitation and development of Syria’s energy infrastructure, drawing on the expertise and capabilities of Egyptian petroleum sector companies, particularly Enppi and Petrojet.

Discussions further covered technical training, capacity building and the exchange of expertise.

Badawi said Egyptian-Syrian relations are founded on longstanding historical and fraternal ties, providing a strong basis for expanding cooperation across various sectors, particularly energy.

He noted that shared interests and a common vision for greater Arab integration create significant opportunities to deepen cooperation in oil and natural gas.

The minister highlighted Egypt’s extensive experience across the petroleum and gas industry, as well as its advanced infrastructure, including gas transmission networks, processing facilities and liquefaction plants.

He said these capabilities position Egypt to support joint projects with Syria in the coming period.

Badawi added that stronger cooperation would contribute to energy security and regional integration while supporting development efforts, reconstruction and the recovery of Syria’s energy sector.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and consider establishing a technical mechanism to oversee the implementation of agreed projects, with the aim of supporting Syria’s energy sector recovery.
