Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat has reaffirmed Egypt’s readiness to support Sudan in rebuilding and rehabilitating its electricity infrastructure, stressing the sector’s extensive expertise and skilled workforce, as well as its proven track record in emergency response, reconstruction and infrastructure rehabilitation.
The minister made the remarks during his meeting on Thursday with Sudan’s Minister of Oil and Energy, Al-Moatasem Ibrahim Ahmed Ali, and his accompanying delegation at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.
The meeting followed the standing directive of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to provide the necessary support to the people of Sudan and strengthen the historic ties between the two countries.
The discussions focused on advancing the second phase of the Egypt-Sudan electricity interconnection project, including the 300-megawatt, double-circuit Toshka 2–Wadi Halfa line, installing the required equipment, and arranging for the reception and training of Sudanese work teams for the project’s remaining stages.
The two sides also discussed urgent measures to rehabilitate Sudan’s electrical networks, hydroelectric and thermal power plants and transformer stations; provide transformers of various capacities and mobile support units; expand solar energy projects in selected areas; and supply electricity to residential, industrial and agricultural communities, particularly vital agricultural areas and facilities in northern Sudan.
The meeting further covered specialised training, rehabilitation and capacity-building programmes, drawing on Egyptian expertise in system efficiency, infrastructure modernisation and grid reconstruction following the systematic sabotage suffered by Sudan’s energy infrastructure.
Assistant Foreign Minister for Sudan and South Sudan Affairs, Ambassador Hany Salah, Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, Mona Rizk, and Head of the Central Administration for International Cooperation, Major General Mohamed Eissa, attended the meeting.
