Egypt’s government is advancing a green logistics strategy to modernize transport and supply chains, as part of efforts to support sustainable economic growth and strengthen the country’s position as a regional logistics hub, Egypt’s Cabinet Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) said on Tuesday

In a report titled “Green Logistics.. Towards a Sustainable Supply Chain Model,” the centre said Egypt is adopting sustainable logistics models through port modernisation, road network upgrades and wider use of clean energy, in line with its broader development strategy.

The report said the government is implementing an integrated plan to transform seaports into smart logistics hubs linked to global supply chains. Egypt has 19 seaports, including 14 existing ports undergoing upgrades and five new ports under construction.

East Port Said ranked third globally and first regionally in the 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), while other Egyptian ports also improved their global rankings, reflecting ongoing infrastructure and efficiency upgrades, it added.

The transport and storage sector has contributed an average of about 5% of Egypt’s gross domestic product between fiscal years 2015/16 and 2024/25, while employing around 2.9 million people, or 8.7% of the country’s workforce, in the first quarter of 2026, the report noted.

Egypt’s freight forwarding and logistics market was valued at an estimated $10.93 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow to $14.66 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate of 5.04 per cent, driven by national infrastructure projects, manufacturing, e-commerce and digital transformation, the report said.

Foreign currency earnings from transport services reached $9.4 billion in fiscal year 2024/25, underscoring the logistics sector’s growing contribution to Egypt’s external revenues, it added.

The report highlighted government initiatives to promote green logistics, including cleaner transport systems, smart and green ports, integrated logistics zones, digital transformation, solar-powered warehouses and expanded multimodal transport.

Globally, the green logistics market generated an estimated $2.4 trillion in revenue in 2024 and is projected to reach $4.5 trillion by 2030, reflecting accelerating adoption of environmentally sustainable logistics practices and efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the report said.
