Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, attended on Thursday the signing ceremony of two agreements to establish separate battery energy storage stations with a combined capacity of 1,500 MWh in Zafarana and Benban. 

An agreement was also inked to build a factory producing battery storage systems with an annual capacity of 3,000 MWh.  

The projects involve the “Nefertiti” standalone battery storage project (1,000 MWh) in Benban and the “Horus” standalone project (500 MWh) in Zafarana. 

The agreements were signed between AMEA Power (Al Nowais Group), China Energy, and Gotion, covering engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts.  

Energy storage systems were introduced last year for the first time in Egypt’s national electricity grid, Minister Esmat said.

He also emphasised that expanding battery storage is vital to secure the grid and ensure sustainable supply as Egypt increases reliance on solar and wind power under its national energy strategy. The plan aims to reach 14,320 MWh of storage capacity by 2028.  

The move reflects Egypt’s commitment to localising industry and transferring technology through partnerships that maximise resources and strengthen the role of the private sector, he stressed.

These efforts support Egypt’s ambition to become a regional hub for renewable energy equipment manufacturing, in line with the country’s sustainable development strategy.
