Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operaion and Egyptian Expatriates has secured the exit of 15 Egyptian seafarers stranded in Ukraine to neighbouring Moldova, to return home as soon as possible.
The move is part of the Foreign Ministry’s efforts to support and protect Egyptians overseas, ministry Spokesperson Nader Zaki said in a statement on Tuesday on the ministry’s Facebook page.
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty gave instructions to the ministry’s Consular Affairs Sector and the Egyptian embassies in Ukraine and Romania, which is also accredited to Moldova, to expedite procedures for the seafarers, after their vessels had been caught up in military operations in the Black Sea, and facilitate their return to Egypt as soon as possible, Zaki added.
The two embassies secured transit visas for the seafarers to enter Moldova after obtaining the necessary identification documents and contacting the companies they work for to arrange their return tickets, the spokesperson said.
The 15 seafarers have crossed into Moldova and are awaiting their return to Egypt on the earliest available flight, he added.
