An informed source expressed great surprise at a recent statement by the African Union Commission on what it described as rising tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt, Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported on Saturday.
The source said Egypt, which takes pride in its African identity and is a founding member of the African Union, viewed the statement as an incomprehensible attempt to involve it in an internal Ethiopian issue.
Egypt’s foreign policy was based on international law and the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and the African Union’s Constitutive Act, including respect for state sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and good-neighbourly relations, the source said.
The current crisis in Ethiopia was internal and had no connection to Egypt, the source said, adding that attempts to distract from the domestic causes of events in Ethiopia should be avoided.
Such moves would not help calm the situation in a fellow African country that needed support from the African Commission to emerge from chronic cycles of conflict, the source added.
Egypt would continue working closely with its African partners to meet the legitimate aspirations of the continent’s peoples by promoting peace and security and strengthening economic and investment partnerships, the source said, for a future of dignity, well-being and prosperity for African countries.
