Egypt has been unanimously re-elected to chair the Executive Bureau of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity (AMCE) for a second consecutive term, while Algeria was chosen as vice-chair, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy said on Tuesday.
The decision reflects Egypt’s role in promoting joint Arab action under the League of Arab States.
The announcement was made during the 16th session of the AMCE, hosted by Saudi Arabia in Riyadh over two days.
Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat said Egypt would continue working with fellow Arab countries to activate the Arab Electricity Market Agreement and advance plans for a comprehensive Arab electricity interconnection network.
The agreement was signed during the council’s 15th session, hosted by Egypt in the New Capital.
Esmat said establishing a common Arab electricity market would cap nearly two decades of efforts to achieve comprehensive electricity interconnection across the Arab world.
The Egypt-Saudi Arabia electricity interconnection project, which has entered trial operation, serves as a model and a cornerstone for a wider Arab electricity network, he added.
