Egypt’s Intellectual Property Authority, headed by Hisham Azmy, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), represented by Sacha Wunsch-Vincent, convened a high-level dialogue in Cairo on Tuesday to explore ways to strengthen Egypt’s innovation ecosystem.
The event brought together senior officials, international experts, and representatives of government bodies and institutions concerned with innovation.
Azmy stressed the importance of deepening cooperation with WIPO to support Egypt’s national innovation system and improve its ranking in the Global Innovation Index.
He highlighted the authority’s central role in developing policies and mechanisms that protect intellectual property rights while linking them to economic development.
Head of the Economics and Data Analytics Department at WIPO, Wunsch-Vincent, reviewed the latest developments in the innovation index and Egypt’s current standing.
He also outlined key strengths and opportunities to enhance the competitiveness of Egypt’s knowledge-based economy, underscoring the need for integrated policies that support scientific research, entrepreneurship, and stronger links between innovation and market needs.
Azmy reiterated that the dialogue reflects Egypt’s commitment to expanding cooperation with WIPO and advancing innovation-led policies, positioning intellectual property as a cornerstone of sustainable economic development and knowledge-based economy.
For his part, Wunsch-Vincent emphasised that innovation is a strategic tool for transforming economies, noting that Egypt’s increasing coordination among stakeholders demonstrates a growing awareness of the importance of building an integrated innovation ecosystem.
Both sides noted that the dialogue goes beyond reviewing international indicators, aiming instead to identify practical pathways to boost investment in research and development.
