Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli affirmed that Egypt is committed to deepening co-operation with Lebanon across key sectors, particularly energy. He highlighted a newly signed agreement as a practical outcome of his recent visit to Beirut and a reflection of Cairo’s support for the Lebanese people.

Madbouli’s remarks came during a signing ceremony on Wednesday, where an agreement was concluded to implement the repair and rehabilitation of gas pipelines in Lebanon. The project will be carried out by Egypt’s petroleum sector through the Technical Gas Services Company (TGS).

The agreement was signed by Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi and Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water Joseph Saddi. Lebanese Ambassador to Egypt Ali al-Halabi attended the event.

Madbouli noted that the agreement builds on the outcomes of his December visit to Beirut, giving paramount importance to energy co-operation. He stressed that Egypt’s petroleum sector is placing extensive technical expertise in natural gas networks at Lebanon’s disposal, in line with Egypt’s keenness to boost Lebanon’s infrastructure and ensure sustainable energy supplies.

For his part, Badawi underscored that the agreement reflects the capability of Egyptian petroleum companies to execute specialised projects beyond Egypt’s borders, drawing on their accumulated expertise in operating and maintaining natural gas networks in line with international standards.

Under the agreement, TGS will undertake the upgrade of approximately 30 kilometres of 24-inch diameter gas pipelines, in addition to developing associated pressure reduction and metering stations, as well as linked power facilities.

The scope of work also includes mechanical installations, the modernisation of programmable logic control (PLC) systems, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, alongside cathodic protection works and the necessary technical and operational testing. These efforts aim to ensure the efficient and reliable reactivation of the pipelines and associated facilities.
