CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Mollah asserted Friday that Egypt has been leading efforts to outline an initiative on energy which focuses on the just transfer of energy to Africa.

In statements on the fringe of the first coordination meeting of the forum of gas exporting countries ahead of the UN Climate Conference (COP27) set for November in Sharm El Sheikh, Mollah said that Egypt is hosting the UN Climate Conference on behalf of Africa and would express the voices of African states along with shedding light on their rights and aspirations to achieve a sustainable economic and social development and prosperity for all.

He said the energy sector across the globe is facing major challenges, pointing out to other geopolitical challenges that has posed a threat to energy security and harmed the world energy supplies.

Mollah reiterated that the common objective of the gas exporting countries is to secure safe resources for gas and in ways that preserves the environment and reduce carbon and methane emissions.

He said COP27 convocation comes at a very critical timing for the gas exporting countries which is an international alliance comprising 19 states, with a production representing 70 percent of gas reserves.

He also highlighted Egypt’s success in achieving self-sufficiency of natural gas in 2018 and its exportation LNG as a result of its expansion in the use of gas at the local market, noting that gas has been extended to more than 13 million housing units and supplied more than 500,000 vehicles.

The minister also reviewed Egypt’s vision in its capacity as president of COP27 as it will call for taking certain moves in the phase of negotiations and planning for actual implementation of African initiative on the ground along with reviewing the oil sector efforts to counter the energy crisis and its success at the local, regional and international levels.
